Beginning Boat Building: Tips for Selecting Your First Project
If you are in the process of selecting your first boat building project, here are some tips to help you choose a project that will be a success. Many beginning boat builders mistakenly assume that the easiest boat to build for a beginner is a dugout canoe or similar project. However, these actually require quite a bit of skill. You need to know how to select the right kind of tree, hollow it out to the right dimensions, remove the bark efficiently and much, much more.
Instead, for your first project you should probably either rely on easy to assemble boat kits or use easy to follow boat plans. Boat kits are the more expensive option, but they are also the easiest option. With many boat kits you can assemble a boat in a matter of days.
However, for a true boat building experience, you will likely want to start from scratch. If so, you need to find quality and easy to follow boat plans for the project. You should also choose a boat design that is easy for beginners to build and start small, such as a row boat or kayak. Plywood boat plans are usually the easiest for beginners to use.
You will find the most success if you choose a building method such as stitch-and-glue, which does nor require the building of a frame. With this method, your first boat project can usually be finished in a matter of weeks, and you will have developed the basics building skills necessary to move onto larger and more advanced boat building.
