There is, however, an old saying that you should keep in mind whenever you consider purchasing an used wooden boat: “Nothing works on an old boat but the owner.”

This saying may often be true, although there may be some exceptions to this rule as well. However, you should keep in mind that most wooden boats have a limited lifespan – usually between five and ten years – although the lifespan of any wooden boat can certainly be extended with proper maintenance and care.

What this means is that when you are looking at used wooden boats for purchase you should be sure to find out: 1) how old the boat is, and 2) how well the boat has been maintained. Look carefully for signs of dry rot on the boat, try to find out what kind of sealant was used in its construction, and if at all possible, take it out in the water for a test run.

If the owner of the boat does not have maintenance records, knows little about the boats construction, and will not let you test it before purchase, you will likely end up with a boat the does not float, or floats poorly. If you feel you are able to meet these criteria, your first boat building experience will proceed much more smoothly and easier, and should be an enjoyable and rewarding learning experience.

1) Be sure you are using the right type and grade of plywood. Many plans suggest you use marine plywood, and for the regions of your boat project where the plywood needs to be bent this is definitely the best choice. However, standard grade plywood can be used as well for many boat projects, but you should make sure that it is a high quality plywood grade (AB or higher). This is because blemishes in the wood can leak, and the time and expense you will put into trying to repair inferior plywood sheets will be more costly than investing in better quality plywood.

2) Do not worry if you can not find large plywood sheets for your boat project. If you are building a larger boat using plywood, you can use 4′ by 8′ plywood sheets for the project that are joined together using butt blocks. In fact, properly joined small sheets of plywood are generally stronger than larger plywood sheets, and are thus preferable.

3) Do not use plywood for frame construction. For the frame, regular lumber is a much better choice.

4) Treat your plywood right. If you will be bending the plywood sheets, you should soak the plywood overnight so that it will not crack while being bent.
